Hey, I'm Kya

I'm a Mancunian writer, host and the founder & Editor-in-Chief of Aurelia Magazine, an independent publication that uplifts the first-person stories of marginalised genders.

I am available for freelance writing, hosting and editing projects.

I'm currently working on a book.

What I do

I am a freelance writer, primarily of personal essays that explore identity, sexuality, mental health and culture. Some bylines include Stylist, gal-dem, Sleek Mag, Bad Form, and Time Out.

I am the co-host of CLOSE-UP with Aurelia Magazine, a warm, funny and often existential podcast that gets personal. Our first season is now streaming on all platforms, with our second coming soon.

I have been a host and a speaker for various in-person and virtual events. Selected clients: Sevenstore and Nike, gal-dem, White Claw, I Like Networking, and Manchester International Festival.

I also host my own events regularly, surrounding the art of personal writing, storytelling and getting to the heart of who we are and what we feel.

I was really pleased to be a longlist judge for The Portico Prize, and a panel guest for clients such as Comma Press and Writing on the Wall. I have also spoken about gendered violence for BBC News.

Aurelia Magazine

As the Editor-in-Chief of Aurelia my mission is to spotlight and uplift the personal stories of marginalised genders whilst nurturing a community that is welcoming, full of hope and encourages feeling.

Some of our partners include ASOS, Converse, FACT Liverpool, Royal Exchange Theatre and Manchester International Festival.

We have been nominated for a National Diversity Award and were specially commended by the Freelance Writing Awards for Freelance Project of the Year.
